how to shut-off X and run straight through hardware

I am having a refresh problem with an app I am running on Linux RHEL
3.0 WS. It's a Java app, which I am sure doesn't help at all, but I
have no problems on windows -- which doesn't use anything like X. I
know there is a way to disable using X and use the direct HW buffer. I
am just not sure how.
Then again, I could be going senile. Can someone throw me a bone here?
