rec does not record

How to record with rec?

I speak to my microphone, but nothing is stored to the file.

I try to record like this:
rec test2.aiff

But cannot hear anything, when I try to play the file:
play test2.aiff

audacity works ok.
I can record from mic and I can play the recorded voice with audacity.

But I am not able to record with rec and I would need a command line
tool to record.
Is someone able to help how to make rec work?
