Cablemodem, or DSL modem? The comments and "ppp" keyword in your file
say it's the latter.
It is actually a cable modem. AFAICS "pppoeconf" sets the default
provider name to "dsl-provider", and I didn't change it.

Look at /etc/ppp/peers/dsl-provider . There should probably be a
"defaultroute" line in there that isn't commented out, unless your
machine's routing situation is more complex than you've indicated here.
No, it isn't. My "network" consists only of this very machine.
This is the content of /etc/ppp/peers/dsl-provider:
