CUPS Printing Timeout Problem

I'm running on Red Hat WS Version 4.
I defined printers on the server as LPD and added the IP addres
s to /etc/hosts. I have a few printers that are being disabled
occasionally
with the message:

Remote host did not respond with command status byte after 300
seconds

They are usually disabled if the paper runs out, etc.
The only way to get the printer working again is to restart the
printer daemon.

I do not know if this is happening when a job is sent and the printer
does
not respond after 300 seconds or if the server is maintaining contact
with
the printer and cannot find it for 300 seconds.

Can someone help me understand how Linux treats an LPD printer and
what con
fig settings might be changed to make the timeout longer.
