AMD64 - JRE - browser plugin?

So anyway, I've spend many hours downloading the java JRE from sun to get
the plugin for mozilla/firefox (iceape/iceweasel). And apparently they
don't package a 64 bit version of the plugin in the JRE for version 1.6
and 1.6u2.
So I'm left with a dilemma of whether or not to even run a 64 bit
system. I was hoping to gain some sort of performance boost so some java
applet games on pogo.com would be able to run better/faster on linux.
But without a browser plugin, I can't even play the games on linux. I
already dislike java because they have an obscene EULA, and otherwise
change the API with every release. Now they're flat out deprecating
support for certain OS's.
Is there any easy way to get a browser based JRE running in a 64 bit
linux? I've looked at the chroot method, but that seems overly complex
just to get a JRE to plays some games. nspluginwrapper works for flash,
but doesn't seem to work for java. At least not the sun version. I've
spent days getting a debian net install over dialup of a 64 bit linux.
And several hours downloading suns JRE which I can't use. I really don't
want to hassle with the complexity of a 32 bit chroot to play games. If
only because I'd have to figure out what I did last time in the three
days, weeks, or months until I upgrade again. Not to mention the lack of
a performance gain with running 32 bit apps on a 64 bit system.
I'll probably scrap my debian net install and install ubuntu, but not if
doing that is futile as well. I already have a working 32 bit linux on
this machine. Am I just wasting my time trying to get a 64 bit java JRE
for a web browser? Should I be filing bbb complaints against sun? Or
writing 100 page blogs about how they suck? Because apparently the end
result is exactly the same. In the meantime I'm net installing konqueror
for the next two hours. It supposedly doesn't use the plugin method for
the jre and should work (in theory). But I'd rather use mozilla or
firefox.
