ssh behind gateway

Hello,

I'm trying to ssh directly to a machine that is behind a gateway.

Previously, I did:
Local --> gateway --> node
ssh from local to gateway. Then ssh from gateway to node.

Is it possible to do:
Local --> node ?
ssh from local to node.

X Window System works using the first method because all machines
recognize X protocol. I want to try running a third-party application
(remote audio) on the machines, but I don't have install permission on
the gateway.

Thanks,
Jonathan Shan
