Yes, there are.
Who do you expect to filter them? If the originator, i.e. Google, then
yes, they should, but they don't. If you expect your downstream
newsfeed to filter them, that's less straightforward: they would then be
responsible for spam-filtering every article from every usenet peer.
So, given that the originator of the spam is ignoring requests to cut
off their spammers' accounts, the only recourse is to killfile at the
client. (For purposes of this discussion, tools like slrnpull and
fetchnews are ''clients''.)
With the increasing animosity I see towards Google Groups, I wouldn't be
surprised to see discussion of a UDP some time soon (if it hasn't
started already).
