Another thing which has to be said is that some models may share the same
brand and model name but they are in fact completely different cards with
completely different chipsets. That means that you may search for a certain
model which is claimed to have an atheros chipset but in fact it doesn't.
That is a showstopper.

There is a lengthy list of wireless cards that work well for linux. I
bought a Acer Vista laptop and its wireless card works perfectly under
linux. (I no longer have Vista on it)
