What is SESSION_MANAGER ?

Hello Everyone.
A Unix / Linux newbie here.
I frequently connect to Unix / Linux machines using VNC. Unless the
xstartup file is modified to unset SESSION_MANAGER, it does not show
me the CDE / KDE sessions.

Can someone explain what exactly is SESSION_MANAGER ?
Does it have relevance only in the VNC context or matters even
otherwise ?

If an explanation about the same already exists elsewhere on the net,
a link to it will also be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance,
