Hm. So what does vncviewer show you instead of the stuff running on :0?
Are these machines running x11vnc, vino, KDE Desktop Sharing, or
something else?

Can someone explain what exactly is SESSION_MANAGER ? Does it have
relevance only in the VNC context or matters even otherwise ?

clairissa:~/bin$ env | grep SESSION_MANAGER
SESSION_MANAGER=local/clairissa:/tmp/.ICE-unix/7055

It points to a socket on the local machine, at least in my case. Here,
ksmserver has that socket open for ... something. That variable isn't
set in a non-X ssh session.

If an explanation about the same already exists elsewhere on the net,
a link to it will also be greatly appreciated.

Yes, please. What I have above is half-assed, and I'd like to hear the
fully-assed version.

Hi Matt.
The systems are running Xvnc. If I don't edit the xstartup, it shows
me a blank Xserver (like the one seen using cygwin with the root
window option checked) and an xterm.

So if I understood correctly, the SESSION_MANAGER is a variable that
points to a socket when running an Xsession.
Forgive my lack of knowledge...but I thought that the Xvnc also starts
an Xsession for me. If that is correct, the Xvnc implementation of the
Xsession uses some other means to determine this socket...while the
non-VNC (or let's say local) Xsession uses the variable.

[Very likely that I'm talking rubbish :-) ]

Thanks for your mail.

Does anyone have more explanation / information to share ?
