Hello all. I have tried Linux over the past few years and each time
encountered one roadblock or another (no scanner driver, no printer
driver, can't access a dvd burner, etc.) which continued to hold me in
the Windows world. To be honest I have had it with Windows. I have
tried the latest and greatest Vista and it blows too. Soooo, I will
get to the point. I want to know if I can run Linux (you tell me which
version/brand) and then get either/both WINE and VMware which in the
end will give me the stability of the Linux kernal and allow me to run
all of my windows programs (many are NOT available in Linux and
probably won't be for a long while to come). I am ready to move up and
away from windows to something better but it must still do what I need
it to do. ALL answers, suggestions and HOW-TO's will be greatly
appreciated..... Happy Labor Day to all.

Certainly. WINE is easily available for all major distros. In my
experience, it is sub-optimal - there are a lot of programs which won't
work with it. I believe Linux is far ahead of MS on virtualization, though
I've not specifically tried it.

BTW - if you're only a little selective, it's quite easy to avoid
problems. HP and Epson have excellent support for both scanners and
printers. Brother and Samsung support Linux with their laser printers.
And, I've never had an issue with a DVD burner - bought the cheapest
'MadDog' brand I could find at OfficeMax a couple of years ago and it
works splendidly with k3b. There are Linux equivalents for much MS
software - what programs did you have in mind?
