Just installed Fedora 7 on a clean hard drive. Kept to the recommended
settings during the install. When it finished rebooting tried to get
to the internet via Mozilla Firefox. Screen opens but says cannot
connect to the internet. Upon a reboot noticed during the booting up
one line said, "Determining IP information for ETH0 failed - no link -
check cables, etc." I know for a fact it works as when I reboot (on
another hard drive on a rack) it runs just fine. I am connecting via
FIOS so it is 'on' all the time. I have the router port forwarded and
accomplished this using the Windows "Internet Protocol TCPIP"
properties screen where I could enter the IP and DNS addresses. HOW is
this accomplished under Linux? I have tried entering "Direct
connection" just to see if it would connect but no dice. Any help to
get it to connect to the outside world would be great. I have disabled
the firewall - no luck. PS. I am using my Windows hard drive to send
you all this msg.... Thanks for any help in getting this fixed.

If the network card is supported, and if there is a DHCP server, the
installation should have automatically set up the network. If there is
no DHCP server, you can set the IP address with ifconfig, and set the
DNS by editing /etc/resolv.conf.

Thanks for the reply however I am still not getting it (sorry windows
has destroyed my brain...).
I am using an MSI mb with build int network connectors NOT an add in
network card. Under
windows NETWORK folder the active one is listed as an NVIDIA Nforce
network controller. While
its recognizing it as a Marvell technology controller could it be that
it needs a(N) Nvidia driver that it
didn't install or find??

When I boot Fedora 7 I get the above error msg. When I go to NETWORK-
SCRIPTS > ifcg-eth0
I see the following: # Marvell Technology - PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet
Controller
Device = eth0
Bootproto=dhcp
Hwaddr = <<string of numbers listed>>
onboot = yes

If I go to ifcfg=lo I get the following: IPADDR = 127.0.0.1
NETMASK =
255.0.0.0
NETWORK =
127.0.0.0
BROADCAST =
127.255.255.255
ONBOOT = YES
NAME = loopback

I know what IP, SUBNET, DEFAULT, and DNS I need as it works with my
current Windows configuration. HOW/WHERE do I enter this info so I can
online with Linux???

Sorry to be so ignorant but you mentioned to enter "ipconfig" WHERE do
I type/click or enter this command. Under windows I could use the "C"
prompt and enter right there. IS there an equivelant in Linux?? Sorry
to ask so many questions but I really want to get this darn
installation up and running and I am stuck on the internet. Thanks for
your input in this......
