Something I said before was in error, too. I *have* used DVD+. AAMOF
that's all I have right now except for the DVD-RWs that get the same
results. My boss gave me some DVDs a few weeks ago because I burned a
lot of them for him before, back when things were working. I just
assumed those were DVD- and never really looked at them until tonight.
To judge about jour problems, we need the output from cdrecord -atip
for the bad media...
I threw out all of the previous bad burns after verifying they were
going to work. I downloaded FC7 and burned it to a DVD-RW, and I
haven't verified whether it works or not, but I already know the
checksums are different. I don't know if that matetrs or not, but I'm
trying to make full disclosure.
Here's what I get:
Well, try to avoid RITEK media.
Ritek dual layer media will not work at all at all in most writers and
rewritable media may have read problems because of lower reflectivity.
Quality media from Verbatim is still less than 2 Euro and it is not worth
to use cheap meadia.
OK. Just for grins I decided to try some things.
I'd been working with the external drive. I decided to try using the
internal. In the past that wasn't working either. But I'd had a couple
of cases where I could burn to the internal OK, but the external gav me
grief.
So I burn a DVD to a DVD+R. It fails to boot. I burn the same file to a
DVD-RW. It boots, but it screws up right when it's time to go to the
dekstop. I decide I want to be certain that the burner isn't getting
what I need.
I had a couple of old DVD-RWs I hadn't used in a few years. I was going
to store music to them, but that turned out to be more trouble than it
was worth when I exceeded 30G of music. So I left them lay on a shelf.
I pulled one off, burned the iso and booted. It worked. All the way to
the desktop. Not a single crash or error.
Still not satisfied, I burned another DVD+R. It failed to boot.
I put the known good RW into the external drive and burned the iso. It
failed to boot. So now I know I can't use the external with this
install.
I replaced the cdrtools binaries with the wodim binaries and tried the
good RW again using the internal drive. It failed to boot. I burned it
again to be sure. It failed to boot. I pulled out a +R and burned it on
the internal. It failed to boot.
I put the cdrtools binaries back and burned it once more. It booted
fine.
So, it appears I'm having problems with some media, with wodim (at the
moment) and with the external drive.
I won't use the external drive for more than reading and ripping. I
haven't had any failures on those counts.
I went out and bought another brand of RWs and -Rs to do some more
testing. They're more expensive. Whether or not they're better is an
unknown for now.
For /this/ installation I can't use wodim, at least not without some
testing on the new media. But I'm not ready to name it as a particular
problem until I can test it again with something else installed, and
with the newer media.
