Don't think I'll ever understand the mentality of people who object to a
national health service.

Some of us still adhere to the pre-New Deal mindset, where we actually
believe that we are responsible for our own lives, and the federal
government has no business intruding on them except in very limited
circumstances. I for one certainly do not view the state of my health
as a federal issue.

I agree with the implication that I am my brother's keeper, not as a slave
master, but as a fellow human being. But I should not abuse my health and
expect a bail-out from someone else. We really are social animals, not
individuals. There is a place for individuality, but there is also a place
for social concerns. Before modern civilization, this used to be done by
extended family, tribe, etc. Later, by organized religion. Economically,
these have all been supplanted by the state. Since the state consumes so
many of our resources (financial and otherwise), it is no longer possible to
support the organized religions as used to be possible. People paid a tithe
to the church, but now many pay three or more tithes in taxes to the state,
so there is not that much left. Since the state assumes responsibility for
consuming our wealth, it should give use something in return other than
enriching the already wealthy.

Insightful and well said.

With the wrong luck, the medical industry can consume every cent you
have in short order.
I have every intention of taking care of myself but events
beyond my control may intervene.

The conservative "I can take care of myself" mentality is
beyond understanding.

Yes, I believe I'm responsible for my own actions but I know
all too well I may need help some day.
