One audiocard, two users

In my system I have one Audigy 2 ZS card. (Gentoo Linux, kernel 2.6.17)
I use ALSA for audio control and KDE as a desktop. I work locally on the
machine, my gf has an old pc (Mendocino, 200MHz, 32Mb) which runs an X
session and connects to my pc running vncserver, so her KDE session also
runs on my computer. Her system has no audiocard.
I have sound available for both users, but when one of the users mutes the
audio or changes the volume the other session follows suit, which is not
what we want/
(How) is it possible to have separate audiocontrol (minimally volume) for
the users not influencing the other's settings? Can I 'clone' the device
logically, or is there any software I can put in between the ALSA
controls, or kmix and the user mastering the user's volume settings
independantly from the master volume?
Tips welcome, help appreciated.
