Next year I would like to go to University to do a BSC Conputer Science.
However, I think my job prospects on leaving University would be greatly
enhanced if I had studied Open Source computing. A lot of companies
seem to be using it, but Universities insist on turning out graduates
who seem to only know Microsoft/Windows.
Does anyone know of a university with a degree in Open Source Computing,
or a degree which has a large element of Open Source ?
If I make my choice, what Open Source type modules should you think I
should be looking for. Obviously operating systems (linux, of course),
but what else ?
Your suggestions and guidance would be appreciated.

Don't worry about any specific technology, what ever you learn in college
will be obsolete before you graduate. The important skills that you need
to learn are,
Understanding systems,
How to solve problems,
How to learn
I've been designing computer hardware for 35 years, most of the things
that I've designed no longer exist (mini computers for example) and most
of the companies that I've worked for are long gone. When I started out
the state of the art chip had 4 gates in it, now they have hundreds of
millions. The state of the art design tool was a pencil, now we uses
hardware description languages. I've been able to move from one
technology to another because the fundamentals don't change even if the
tools, technologies and final products do. As long as you can read you
can figure out how to do the next thing. The important thing is that you
be able to figure things out for yourself, that way you'll be able to
keep up with the changes that you are going to encounter over your
career.
Thanks for the advice.. Wasn't it Plato who said an education is what
is left after you have forgotten everything you learned at school ?
