Hi there,If you use aptitude instead of apt-get to install and remove packages,
New user here. I installed the gnome-applets package and as expected
apt-get automatically added 40MB of gnome required stuff. Now I want
to remove the gnome-applets package. I try with:
apt-get remove --purge gnome-applets
But I'm only offered the option to remove the gnome-applets package
alone, about 815Kb. How can I remove everything that was downloaded
and installed along with gnome-applets?
it can automatically remove packages that are no longer needed.
You can also use aptitude in interactive mode.
Type "aptitude", wait until it shows "New Packages", "Installed
Packages", "Not Installed Packages", etc.
then type "/gnome-applets", and press enter twice. You
should see the full description of gnome-applets.
Use the arrow keys to scroll down to the dependencies. Press enter by
each package name to see its status (list of available versions with
"i"=installed "p"=not installed or configured "c"=configured but not
installed "B"=broken "d"=marked for deletion "A"=automatic).
You can press "-" to mark a package for removal or "M" to mark the
package as automatic (remove if no other package needs it.)
When you are done selecting packages you can press "g" to list the
packages that are selected for removal or installation, and "g" again to
execute these selections (if you are not root you will be prompted for a
password, and then you press "g" again).
