Funny. I just loaded up PCLinuxOS in a console tonight to reformat a
drive as NTFS. This isn't the first time, either. In fact, that's the
mode I almost always use to mess with NTFS partitions. I just choose
the "console" line and login as root.

It gives you a console, but it's using graphics mode to do it. Knoppix
does the same.

I'm not getting what you mean. I don't see anything X-related when I
run it up. It just goes to a text-based (console) login.


It's running the console through the graphics card, just like when you
open a console window from the desktop menu.

IOW you want it to run up a console somewhere you can't see on a
screen? That doesn't have anything to do with X. That's just a display
thing.
