mode. The bios screen and the initial Lilo window are readable so I
know that would work. Is there a livecd that will boot to text
mode? All of the ones I've tried boot to graphics mode even when
come up showing a command line. I 've tried Knoppix(both new and old
versions), systemrescue, pclinuxos, ubuntu, puppy & damn small. Most
have a readable screen initially but then become unreadable when they
boot up.

I'm not getting what you mean. I don't see anything X-related when I
run it up. It just goes to a text-based (console) login.
It's running the console through the graphics card, just like when you
open a console window from the desktop menu.
IOW you want it to run up a console somewhere you can't see on a
screen? That doesn't have anything to do with X. That's just a display
thing.
