FWIW I'm confused, too. I don't know a non-trivial way to route a vanilla
Linux display (text or GUI) anywhere except via the video subsystem. That
can very likely be done, but again IMO I don't think it's trivial.
(I'm aware of remote X, $DISPLAY, etc. but IMO it's still standard video)
I don't know how video works either. All I know is that when my PC first comes up I get a readable screen if I go into the bios screens and when the Lilo screen comes up. The livecds also initially show a readable screen. When they boot linux they go into some other video mode as the screen then goes wacko.
I'm just guessing from what I see. I would think that the original readable screen is also going through the graphics system. It must have more than one mode of operation and just because you see a text screen doesn't mean it didn't go through the graphics engine.
