IOW you want it to run up a console somewhere you can't see on a
screen? That doesn't have anything to do with X. That's just a display
thing.
FWIW I'm confused, too. I don't know a non-trivial way to route a vanilla
Linux display (text or GUI) anywhere except via the video subsystem. That
can very likely be done, but again IMO I don't think it's trivial.
(I'm aware of remote X, $DISPLAY, etc. but IMO it's still standard video)
I don't know how video works either. All I know is that when my PC
first comes up I get a readable screen if I go into the bios screens and
when the Lilo screen comes up. The livecds also initially show a
readable screen. When they boot linux they go into some other video
mode as the screen then goes wacko.
They're probably switching into framebuffer mode. Try booting
with kernel options video=vfb:off, video=vesafb:off, video=fbcon:off.
Or just try removing any "video=" or "vga=" options that are
present in the kernel parameters.
If that doesn't work, it might be switching to some unsupported
VGA text mode, so you could try video=normal.
Most liveCDs have help screens that explain the various boot
options (including video modes), so try reading those screens
first.
