There are 2 main features that make desktops really handy for me.
First is the organized list of applications.
This often works against me, when I'm searching for an application in
"System tools" when it's really under "Admin tools" or something
similar. I would prefer to simply know the name of the application and
run it from an xterm.
Second is showing newly mounted external devices as icons. Related to
that is popping a
window to ask what to do with a newly attached usb or firewire device
or a CD or DVD in the optical drive. Maybe I'm just lazy.
There are different ways to be lazy. You can configure automount to
mount a mount point that's touched without having an icon on the
desktop, so e.g. you can insert a cd, do ls /auto/cd, and automount will
attempt to mount the cd if possible. (It's slightly harder to umount
automatically before the timeout expires; you have to issue a umount
/auto/cd (or even sudo umount /auto/cd) if you want to umount before the
time is up.)
