I uninstalled some packages that were causing the conflicts, and then
ran "yum update" again. This time it finished without errors. One of
the packages I uninstalled was "autofs". Now when I try and
reinstall, I'm getting some errors about conflicts with the kernel. I
can't uninstall the kernel. What to do? Here is what happened:
--> Running transaction check
--> Processing Conflict: autofs conflicts kernel < 2.6.17
--> Finished Dependency Resolution
Error: autofs conflicts with kernel < 2.6.17
This error message is self-explanatory. autofs cannot be installed if you
have a kernel older than 2.6.17 installed.
Check the version of your /running/ kernel by using 'uname -a'.
Then, check the versions of all kernels that you have installed by 'rpm -q
kernel'.
If you're not running the most recent kernel that was installed by 'yum
update' -- the last kernel release for FC6 was 2.6.22.14, so you should
have it installed now -- then reboot into the latest kernel. Make sure that
uname -a indicates that this is the kernel you're running. Take the output
of 'rpm -q', and use 'rpm -e' to remove all kernel versions except the
kernel you're current running.
Then you'll be able to install autofs.

Sam, I just want to express my sincere appreciation for your help
during this process. I updated the kernel as per your suggestion and
autofs installed fine after.
My remaining, non-critical questions are, when I last ran "yum
update", why didn't the kernel package get updated?
And lastly, am I now ready to upgrade to Fedora Core 8? This would
have to be a yum upgrade as I do not have access to the machine
directly to run CD-ROMs on.
Thanks, - Dave
