All movies are in the basement, on my server. They are shared via
NFS. Neither the laptop nor any other desktops have copies of these
movies, they get them via NFS, live, when needed.
Can I say that I am most impressed by this setup and a little envious
of a child growing up with a setup like this.
It is nice in many ways to do it this way.
Do you encode the movies and transfer to disk?
I mostly download pirated movies. (I know that I am a terrible person,
don't bother reminding me of that)
I have a special interest in this as I recently spent a bit of time
working on movie encoding with mencoder:

and it sounds like H264 encoding would fit in with your setup pretty
neatly.
I like Xvid encoding the most, it is great. But since mplayer is
omnivorous, I can deal with any encoding as long as it is compact.
