You didn't say what mail server you were using--I'll guess sendmail.

If so, you need to edit your /etc/mail/sendmail.cf file and rebuild the configuration files. It sounds like you need to set the LOCAL_DOMAIN in that file. Find the line that begins "dnl LOCAL_DOMAIN(", take the "dnl" off and edit the line to be your domain name. Then do "make all" from that directory and restart sendmail.

That should help. It would be better if you actually knew what you were doing, so maybe you want to read the documentation at www.sendmail.org.
