I need some help getting the official NVIDIA driver installed
for my GeForce 8600gt.
No idea what "official" means. Nvidia provides their drivers as a
download from their website. For Linux the latest release is called:
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.09-pkg1.run, but nowhere is that called anything
like "official".
I have tried what feels like everything.
If you failed to "try" what Nvidia provides in its instruction you
haven't tried anything.
Install the kernel sources for your distribution including the config
file. Rename the config file as /usr/src/linux/.config. Execute
# make oldconfig
Start the kernel compilation and run it long enough to generate the
custom header files:
# make bzImage
You may have to relink /lib/modules/<version>/build to /usr/src/linux.
Then you can run the installer.
No idea why you'd need to make a new kernel.
I just installed 169.09 a few minutes ago.
Download the .run.
Exit from X, change to runlevel 3 if you have to.
As root, cd to where the .run file is and type:
sh ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.09-pkg1.run
.
