The first try was simply having the end user invoke ssh from
gnome-terminal with the default settings. However, when their application
is brought up there are some issues. From the description I was given
it sounds like what should be lines drawn on the screen are coming up as
alphanumeric characters instead, making for a confusing display. Also
the function keys don't work properly, and in general "it just doesn't
work right."
The line drawing is a matter of enabling the right code in the
terminal description that TERM is set to.
If the application is hardcoded (or equivalently, if the user doesn't
know how to setup a terminal description), this is one of the areas
where scoterm and xterm do differ.
The function keys are a matter of the program (on the SCO box)
knowing what the terminal is sending. In this case it does sound
as if the software running of the SCO box is poorly designed, and
not exactly - SCO's configurable just like anything else.
One thing that confuses some of its users is that some applications
may be looking in termcap, some in terminfo, etc. I see the same
issues in the Linux newsgroups...
has a hardwired terminal type. Just about the only solution to that
is to either find a terminal emulator that you can live with that
will emulate the SCO terminal, or modify something like xterm to
handle it. (I haven't looked, but I doubt that would be too hard
to do.)
xterm can be compiled to add SCO function-key definitions, or with
recent versions (#230, etc) can be told to use a terminal description's
function-keys.
