How often does NAGIOS wake up?

What is the setting which dictates how often Nagios wakes up to inspect
hosts or services? Where is this setting located? I see many settings in
nagios.cfg but I'm not sure which one (if it's even in this settings file)
controls the wake up interval. I'm using Nagios 3.
