Digital cameras and Linux

I am thinking of buying a digital camera, and would like one that
I can connect to my Linux box to upload/download photos. I remember that,
a few years ago, one had to be very careful on the grounds that many
cameras would use proprietary protocols not supported under Linux.
What is the landscape like these days? I seem to recall having
read that most (all?) modern cameras can be connected to a Linux box via
USB, and then be used from Linux as SCSI devices, just as one does with
USB sticks. Is this true?
