I am thinking of buying a digital camera, and would like one that I can
connect to my Linux box to upload/download photos. I remember that, a
few years ago, one had to be very careful on the grounds that many
cameras would use proprietary protocols not supported under Linux.
1) why would you want to? Many digital cameras are USB 1 while
inexpensive card readers are USB 2 and will always work.
2) that is no longer much of an issue - most makers support USB mass
storage protocols - plug it in and it shows up as a removable drive.
What is the landscape like these days? I seem to recall having
read that most (all?) modern cameras can be connected to a Linux box via
USB, and then be used from Linux as SCSI devices, just as one does with
USB sticks. Is this true?
Yes.
