What features of the laptop work under Linux but not under Windows?
Hate to jump into yet another pissing contest, but...
Well, I have a number of high end-ish sound cards that DON'T have windows
VISTA drivers. But work fine under linux. I also have a number of
name 2 such cards that aren't ancient.
yes indeed Linux supports ancient hardware better than Windows.
printers that only work in one version of windows (95/98/ME) and do not
have NT,XP, or Vista drivers. But work fairly well in linux.
again- yes ancient hardware is better supported.
As far as laptop-ish features. It's nice to be up and running with only
minimal things running to conserve battery life. Like not running a GUI
to turn the display up to full brightness while just downloading
You might want to read about how an LCD works, then ask yourself
if this statement above makes any sense.
something. It's nice to be able to turn features off and have them stay
off. Part of security and efficiency is being able to turn your network
huh? If you have admin privileges there'e precious little
you can't turn off in Windows. Can you name anything that
you can;t turn off?
devices off when you're not using them.
Huh? Almost all network cards by default turn off in Windows
with no network attached. I run into this all the time since
for some licensing purposes the network vcard needs to be on.
Just what "network devices" can't you turn off?
And to not flood the network with
Netbeui packets when nothing else on the network is even using Netbeui.
(Or however you spell it)
huh? netbeui went away a long time ago and doesn't even exist
on most modern Windows machines unless someone has added
it in for backwards compatibility.
As far as suspend / hibernate, you can do those things in linux. Although
most distros don't do a very good job of setting that up by default. And
it may not work all that great or all laptops. But I too have the policy
of having the laptop on when I'm using it, and off when I'm not using it.
You only need to use hibernate/suspend when you're on battery power
anyway. But neither state stops the use of battery power, only slows it
down. It has to wake up fairly often to refresh the ram values and such
so they don't fade into oblivion. Not that I can recall a single time
when I was able to suspend/hibernate a laptop running windows for any
extended duration and not have it crash when I tried to recover from
suspend/hibernate.
