cpio and afio have their fans, but tar is still the archive format par
excellence on Unix-like systems.
FWIW...
I reformat USB sticks with ext2 to do tar backups like this without any
problems (AFAIK). As mentioned, gzip works very well for me, too.
I do notice most (all?) USB sticks seem to have a couple of (seemingly)
readonly "partitions" with Doze data/apps. There seems no way to redeem
this wastage via Linux formatting, but it doesn't seem to affect backup
reliability (AFAICT).
As mentioned, FAT32 is OK also, if individual backup files < ~2 GB.
