I am wanting to install linux on a spare PC.
A few questions
Are drivers freely available for things like sound cards and nvidia
cards?
Yes. Both open source ones and proprietary from the likes of nvidia.
Which version of Linux would you recommend for a beginner?
Don't see that it matters too much. I'd suggest you not try gentoo or
LFS, but most anything else should work.
What do you want to use it for? What is your hardware like? If you have a
reasonably powerful computer (1ghz or more) then most anything should
work. If a lower power one, then it gets more interesting.
How about trying some of the Linux Live CDs? Do a simple web search.
Ubuntu comes as a Live CD that will install to the hard drive at the
click of a button - and so do many others. A Live CD will boot and run
from the CD (or DVD) without touching the hard drive - you can 'test
drive' with no commitment.
I am not just a Windows click and install person I built and run a
towered Amiga 1200 030 for years from workbench 2 to 3.9 before buying a
windows pc.
Any advice would be appreciated
