cpio and afio have their fans, but tar is still the archive format par
excellence on Unix-like systems.
FWIW...Can't fdisk them away? Maybe they are hard-wired in there.
I reformat USB sticks with ext2 to do tar backups like this without any
problems (AFAIK). As mentioned, gzip works very well for me, too.
I do notice most (all?) USB sticks seem to have a couple of (seemingly)
readonly "partitions" with Doze data/apps. There seems no way to redeem
this wastage via Linux formatting, but it doesn't seem to affect backup
reliability (AFAICT).
As mentioned, FAT32 is OK also, if individual backup files < ~2 GB.

Really, it's (wyrd) at airmail, dotted with net. DO NOT SPAM IT.

Thank-you to you and "Dances w/ Crows" for the help.
Since there did not seem to be any strong calls not to use one, I
guess that is what I'll do.
(use a USB stick, that is.)
Security is not an issue since it's just me and two of my kids here,
so I guess there is no reason I cannot back things up as root.
I think I'll go ahead and format it ext2. Did you bother trying to
delete any and all partitions first
via fdisk, or just format the biggest partition there?
Thanks!
