Since my e-mails go through Verizon's MTAs, is this my problem or theirs?
In another sense, it must be mine, since e-mails do not go through.

If you mean by "go through" using Verizon's MTA as a smart host (sendmail)
or relayhost (postfix) and your /var/log/maillog shows that Verizon has
accepted your message traffic then the problem lies with Verizon.

No, I do not send much through my sendmail into Verizon's MTA, though I do
that with about 1 e-mail a week. I usually just use Thunderbird through
Verizon's MTA. That does not appear in my sendmail logs, of course.
