If you read the foreign press (easy to do in the internet era), you'll
find that ideas and issues that make Barack Obama look like Barry
Goldwater are considered mainstream or even conservative elsewhere.

Or even read newsgroups and web forums full of people from .uk, .nl,
..de, and .au , as reading actual people's postings tends to cut down on
whatever media bias is present to some extent. Based on that, I think
there are some people in the USA whose heads would explode if they went
to Britain and talked politics with average Brits.

It's really interesting how so many media outlets in so many countries
try to reduce all political issues to "left vs. right" when the reality
is so much more complicated than that. It could be as S.J. Gould has
said, that dichotomy is a fundamental part of the human brain's toolkit,
and it might be better to try to find better dichotomies than to insist
on continua everywhere. (The pirate-ninja dichotomy might be much more
entertaining than the left-right dichotomy, actually....)
