Yes, you cannot execute a .so file on its own.
Generally true. However, it's possible to create a shared library which is
also a standalone executable – I have four such here, and you'll probably
have at least three of them:
/lib/libc.so.6
/lib/libpthread.so.0
/lib/ld-linux.so.2
/lib/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2
