I went out and bought an 8gig drive and installed Ubuntu 8.04 on it.
The install seemed to go well, but when I rebooted into the thumb
drive, it just hung at the blank desktop after logging in. Not really
a desktop, just a blank, brownish screen.
Are you aware that a lot of the 8Gb USB thumb drive are fake ? The MP
has been programmed to lie about its size. A way to test for this is
to format it (fat32) then try to copy more than 5 or six GB of files to
it.
I thought that fat32 can't cope with anything bigger than 4gig.
Why not format them ext2 and see if you can utilise the full stick?
I don't use them BTW, so I can't test your theory.
