How do I get /dev/sdb1 back without rebooting?

Hi All,

Help!

I back up to a removable SATA drive. It mounts on /dev/sdb1.
sdb1
sits unmounted, unless I am backing up. That way the operator can
change the disks whenever he wants (except at 23:00 when the backup
goes off).

Occasionally /dev/sbd1 gets dropped from my /dev directory. It
does show up in /proc (it is currently missing from /dev):

#cat /proc/scsi/scsi
Attached devices:
...
Host: scsi2 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
Vendor: ATA Model: ST3500630NS Rev: 3.AE
Type: Direct-Access

The solution is to reboot. Not a good idea on a server.

How can I get /dev/sdb1 back without rebooting?

Many thanks,
-T
.
