Im building a new server (I say server, it's just a glorified PC).

I don't know whether to go down the nVidia Raid route or Linux Software RAID route.

I personally prefer hardware RAID, where it is available, but I have no experience of Nvidia RAID controllers, so I don't know whether they are a goood thing or a bad thing.

I did a quick google, and it appears that some distributions do not appear to work with an Nvidia RAID controller, but I don't know the extent of this, and whether it is just one particular controller type that is problematic.

Cheers.

I suppsose, unless I run some kind of benchmarking, Im never going to know the answer fully.

I think Im looking for a cross of performance, reliability and portability.

From what I've read, SATA Raid is anything but reliable, it certainly doesn't offer the same performance on RAID1, and it's anything but portable.

So I think decision made.

Still rather bemused about turning the RAID off and seeing the RAID mapper provided by nVidia though.

Cute.
