I faced this problem many times, the kernel did not boot because it
did not have a driver for the disk controller, then I booted something
like knoppix (or else) which had the needed drivers but I was not able
to tell what was the correct driver. Then it takes a little while to
figure out, but if there was a way to list currently used drivers it
would definitely saved a lot of time
lshw shows the driver and module in the configuration:-lines, e.g:
configuration: driver=agpgart-intel latency=64 module=intel_agp
