Hi Ivan,
I was thinking ext3 for the joureling. My backup sets are
about ~ 1 GB in size and are created by "dump". I was thinking of
filling the stick then deleting off the oldest to make room (all in a
bash script).
That said, why is it that you think ext2 would be better?
Please elucidate. (I want the best method!)

It's not that I think that ext2 would better. It's that I don't
think the journaling capabilities provided by ext3 are necessary for my
purposes.
I do my backups daily at given times with cron job, and I use
rsync in order to minimize the amount of data that is written to the USB
stick every time. Journaling does not really help me here, for the stick
is accessed very seldom. In fact, I could do a sync after the backup is
done, thus making sure that any new data is really flushed to the stick.
