mysqld wont start...

System has been fine for several years. Last few days very hot, many electricity supply problems..whole debian etch box crashed..CPU red hot, blew dust out and now it all works except mysqld wont start..

can't seem to find any log files to indicate what might be wrong..it just says 'FAILED...

Any basic chceks anyone can recommend?
