Was everything working fine before or did all of a sudden things just
stopped working? Did you install new hardware or software, etc? It
might help if you gave the system specs. I'm assuming it's a server only.
I am thinking of rebuilding the machine and starting from Scratch, which
flavour of Linux would you recommend? Thanks
By "rebuilding" do you mean adding new, cutting edge hardware to an old
motherboard?
Before adding anything new, I'd just try a basic install of CentOS --
http://www.centos.org/ -- which is the Open Source branch of Enterprise
Red Hat, and see how it goes. Never used it myself, but I've heard great
things about it from friends who run servers.
However, if you have the time, you might try Gentoo --- http://
www.gentoo.org/ -- compiling it 100% from source for a fully optimize, my-
system, my-way set up. This is much the way the BSD variants work.
Gentoo's portage utility makes installing, updating and upgrading a
breeze. If you don't want to compile, generic pre-compiled binaries of
everything are available, too.
