Why so upset? If Slackware is the bee's knees on your hardware, then
don't switch. I prefer Debian to either, although my wife's laptop
runs Xubuntu. Choice is great, and we have many distros to thank for
that, including Ubuntu.

Why IS ubuntu so popular? I can get a dozen distros to boot on any of my
machines. Why does not ubuntu boot on any? That is my question.

Without knowing more about your machines, this question isn't easy to
answer.

I suspect that your problem is with starting X. Am I right?

Anyway, if you have an Ubuntu-specific problem, I suggest asking in
alt.os.linux.ubuntu or alt.os.linux.debian.

P.S. If you don't own "nothome.com" it's pretty inconsiderate to be
using it in your Usenet headers.

Used to be spam harvesters made real domain names a pain. Not so much,
anymore. Old habits die hard? Why are you so put out about it?

He's put out about it because using a domain without permission is
generally agreed to be forgery. Forgery isn't popular with news admins
or news users.

The .invalid moniker exists for a
reason.

No doubt cuz I don't want to reveal my real identity. What don't you
understand?

How would "notbob@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" reveal your real identity?

By the way, here's how to ask questions in a Linux newsgroup:

"I've got a problem with x. I receive the error message y. I've
googled, but I can only find answers for z, which is a different
problem. So far, I've tried p, q and r, buit none of them works."

Here's how not to ask questions in a Linux newsgroup:

"Distro x is crap compared with distro y! The thousands of users of
distro x are all idiots! We hates them, my precious, we does!"
