Re: Updating Ubuntu

Have you ever added a repository to your distribution? Have you ever
installed a Linux package that has not been signed? Do you
trust each and ever package developer? (who can update ANY package in
the tree).

Yes, a few third party repositories.

FYI, we can (me definitely) trust (though not so blindly) all
volunteer developers and, or free software projects; although any of
these may have flaws, mistakes and, or bugs, but none of developers,
maintaners and, or packagers will ever throw any virus and, or
back-hole knowingly in an open source software. Because they otherwise
will/can loose all their repute within minutes.

But if someone purposely inserts a flaw using a false identity, would
they care about their reputation? I'm just saying this is a possibility.

Someone inside of Microsoft could be bribed as well. But it's easier
to escape arrest if you are Joe Random Open Source Developer from a
roaming Internet cafe. So the bribe doesn;t have to be as big. :-)

Are you sure that only the Redmond produces, but the flawless software only?

I never said MS was flawless. But because of the single source nature, and
the rigid control, there are SOME advantages over Microsoft's
approach. A Linux user can purposely ignore security warnings when they
upgrade. It's harder to do this on a Microsoft upgrade.

I'm not against anyone, if someone wants name; I just not love free
and, or open source software, but love it like anything :)

I hate Microsoft's bloated software and the way they cripple the user
with forced policies. I've been a UNIX fan since 1980's, and all of my
servers run open source systems. It's the only way as I see it.

Or... you can check up on the research yourself.

NP, I shall; who knows it is but only a paid effort?

Well, I would be surprised if the Arizona paper was paid by Microsoft.
It doesn't even mention Windows.
