The Usenet's Future (was: Re: Fool's Multi-Boot: Hosed My System?)

If your ISP is like mine (Verizon), you cannot get any of the alt
newsgroups anymore. Probably in the interest of "better service."

It seems that an ambitious attorney-general by the name of Cuomo discovered
that, out of 100,000 or so alt groups that have been created (anyone can
create one though no server has to carry it), several binary ones sometimes
distributed what he claims was child porn. Said attorney general made
thinly veiled accusations and threats implying that the ISPs were not
"thinking of the children" and Verizon, among others, dumped all of alt.
Some dumped all of Usenet.

That child porn stuff is just a cover. All the big corporations
and political parties hate the usenet. They hate free speech. The
usenet can't be controlled like tv and radio stations and movie
studios and newspaper and magazine and book publishers, etc.

If we don't seperate the text groups from the binary groups, and
make the binary groups run their own network, they are going to
be used as an excuse to shut down the whole usenet.

There _is_ a lot of illegal and very distasteful stuff going on
in the binary groups and they are a completely diffrent thing
than the text groups.

The text groups are forums. The binary groups are file-transfer
vehicles.
