You may find that combination VHS/DVD recorders obey the Macrovision
copy protection instructions applied to many VHS tapes and refuse to copy
them. By getting a separate VHS player and DVD recorder you can insert a
dongle in the SCART connection that rips out the Macrovision stuff. (I've
not tried this yet but it's on my pile of "things to do one day".)
