Allen, thank you. It's a rather new installation. I didn't do
configuration on it. Maybe I'll read more documents on it later :)

NetworkManager usually makes you connect manually once, then remembers for wired networks. Like I said, I usually rip it out for servers and use the network init script. NetworkManager's strength is selecting from among available wireless networks, if you're using wireless.

To configure the network init script to start the network (if you remove
NetworkManager or turn it off) in runlevels 2, 3, 4, and 5, as root do:

# chkconfig --levels 2345 network on

Yes, this solves my problem. Are those `newtork' and `smb' in the
command exactly the filenames in folder /etc/init.d/ ? And the utility
chkconfig does know the place to find them, right? I feel that its
manpage doesn't say this explicitly. Thank you very much again.

"network" and "smb" are indeed the service names exactly as they appear in that directory.

chkconfig has some config files itself to know where to find stuff, but Fedora/RedHat sets it up for you. I've never, ever had to touch them. The most I've ever done is use --add and --delete to manage their entries.
