checking bootloader

I have two identical ~600 GiB disks, and I use one is for daily operation
while one is a mirror. The mirror is spun down when it's not being used,
so in effect it's spun down 23+ hours a day. I want to have them
identical, so that when one fails, I can change some cables and/or
jumpers, reboot, and have a system that's current as of the last
backup. I wrote a script /export/bin/backup which copies the main drive
to the backup drive. It's run once a day, once it's fixed up. Since
the defined partitions take up maybe half the drive, I figured it's
worthwhile to modify /export/bin/backup so it copies each partition
instead of the whole thing. I can only do that if the partition tables
are identical; it checks that, and does a "traditional" copy if they
differ.
But the bootloader is not copied in the partition-by-partition mode, so
if I change it on the master, the mirror isn't. How many blocks do I
need to copy to ensure the bootloader gets copied? It doesn't matter if
some of the partition table or first partition get copied as well,
since they're identical anyway (or should be).

My parents went to a planet where the inhabitants have no
bilateral symmetry, and all I got was this lousy F-shirt.
