They cite one paper, which is really excellent. ftp://ftp.cs.wisc.edu/pub/paradyn/technical_papers/fuzz-revisited.ps
It shows pretty convincingly that Gnu utilities are clearly superior to industry average (I'm not surprised about *that* ) in terms of number of bugs found by their automated test suite.
Almost exactly what I was looking for, but it is a bit dated (from 1995) and I think they narrowed the scope (it appears to be very c-centric) as a compromise to get good quality data. No criticism intended, but would you know if there have been any more recent followup studies?
